Poem of the Week – Can You Guess

I meant to write this on Wednesday, but things got in the way. Thoughts, happenings, feelings. I do feel a bit stuck in a rut, but I wonder if that’s because I’m looking for another job and I’m eager to get my life along a route that is more stable, future-focused, and generally akin to something normal. It’s been an interesting year to say the least. I won’t say it is unusual, even if others might think so. The fact is, there have been many instances in humanity’s history of plagues and pandemics, and we have been exceptionally lucky over the past several decades – or perhaps I should say, privileged, in certain countries of the world.

I recognise my privileges. Not everyone has these privileges, even in my own country. I thank the universe for the fact I can live with my family, that I have a job, a roof over my head, that I am safe and sound, receiving a vaccine, and generally just all the blessings in my life.

Ok, that doesn’t mean there won’t be days that I’m fed up. That I want something different, like a new job, a new surrounding, a new dream. We all have those highs and lows. We all strive for something, whatever those dreams are. We all want more. Isn’t that what being human is all about?

In any case, here’s my poem for this week. I hope you like it.

Can You Guess

Can you take a guess at my thoughts
Whirling around and around
I cannot always control them
They alight each day without sound

Can you take a guess at my surroundings
They ache for a change each day
I sit perturbed by a virus
And my fears I can’t always say

Can you take a guess at my heart
That longs for things unseen
Sometimes in the darkest of night
The thirst for more bursts at the seams

Can you take a guess at my dreams
They appear unbidden and gleaming
Some never root, while others strive
To shine in the night and sing

All these thoughts and feelings
My heart’s longing for different surroundings
Stuck in a rut, wondering at a change
I stare at the horizon and wonder what the future brings

We can plan everything down to a tee
We can wish everything comes true
But life is a mystery within itself
Bringing new things right out of the blue.
