April 2021 Word of the Month: Open

Have you been feeling it? Everything seems to be opening up lately, just a crack, but slowly but surely. Spring is here and the leaves have been budding and unfurling. Here in the UK things are starting to open up in terms of meeting outside in groups of six, outside sports are available to book, and the sun has been streaming out. I don’t know about you, but I feel like there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon, despite the news.

So this month, because of the season and how things are changing here, I’ve chosen the word ‘Open’.

Open has a number of meanings. As an adjective, it describes how we open up the windows, open up the doors, open up things in general, and I feel with the slightly warmer weather people have been doing just that. We’ve had the door open from the kitchen into the garden, spent an afternoon enjoying the sunshine (on Friday I literally sat for a few hours outside and read my book – ‘Shadow and Bone’ by Leigh Bardugo – the review will be out tomorrow).

As a verb, it can either mean the action to open up something, or to allow access. I also think it means the act of being ‘open’ to things. Of trying new things out, of stepping out of your comfort zone.

“Open your eyes to the beauty around you. Open your mind to the wonders of life. Open your heart to those who love you. And always be true to yourself.” – Maya Angelou

As you may know, I am doing Camp NaNoWriMo, but I’m trying to be more open to new things this month by not just writing my book, but posting that I am writing my book. I’m also posting poetry daily, rather than weekly, for the whole month of April based on prompts that I’ve come up. It’s poetry month in April, so I thought – why not?

I am also being more open to trying out vlogging. So I’ve started a vlog too, on YouTube, where I will mainly share my monthly reads and my monthly bullet journal. I’ll start off small and hopefully it will grow.

So there’s a lot I’m doing this month. I’m aiming to relish the opening up of nature around me too, enjoying the change in the weather (though I think it’s set to get a little colder next week). But despite the weather inconsistencies here in East Devon, and the chill sea breeze, I’m excited to know that things are changing, albeit slowly.

How do you think you will be more ‘open’ this month? Will you try out something new? Will you be open to new ideas? Will you open up the doors and windows to the Spring?

All the best wishes for the season, and as it’s Easter today, I hope you’re opening up your chocolate eggs and celebrating!
