Today is the autumn equinox, or Mabon (it falls between the 21st to 23rd of September every year, actual date depending on the year), so I felt an autumnal poem was in need. I know I’ve written a few poems about the season, but I really liked how easy this was to write. It only took me 10-15 minutes, as I just felt the words flowing through me, dripping into my mind like falling leaves.
The season is changing, and I feel autumn is here. There’s a chill in the air in the early mornings, brushed away by the sun during the day, but by the evening I’m wrapping up warm again in an extra layer, snuggling down on the couch to do my embroidery project or hunkering down on my bed under the blankets with a good book. And of course, a cup of tea.
I’ve already been baking, which I tend to do more in the cooler seasons. The Great British Bake-off has graced our TV sets, the first episode airing last night, and it was a family-watch affair.
Yes, I enjoy autumn. The warm glow of the sun, the pale dew on the grass in the morning (although our dogs get wet and muddy paws…), and all the fruits on offer. The leaves are falling, and I’m tempted to grab a few just to paint and draw.
I’ve even been going out with my camera to take a few shots, so I’ll be posting a blog post with some of those pictures this week. Just the flowers that are still in bloom and the berries appearing on the trees.
But let’s get into the poem, shall we?
Here it is, and I entitle it: Autumn Equinox.
Autumn Equinox
The full moon is rising
And the day is dim
The autumn season’s
About to begin
The ground below our feet
Thickens now with dew
The light and dark equal
As the season starts anew
The harvest is rich
The apple boughs thick
Berries red and black
We’ll eat until we’re sick
A steaming pie in the oven
The spices in the air
Cinnamon, cardamom,
And that ripe and juicy pear
The season is beginning
Can you feel it rising now
The glow in the autumn morning
As the summer takes a bow
The leaves are changing colour
Falling soft now to the ground
The birds are flying south
To warmer shores they’re bound
There’s a hint of summer sun
In the flowers still a’bloom
Reds and yellows peering still
But that autumn’s coming soon
So we’ll curl up and watch the rain
Walk through the crisp, cool day
Wrap up tight against the chill
And delight in the colour display
The autumn’s falling now
Can you hear it on the wind?
Hunker down now, my friends
As the darker days set in.

That’s so great, my husband and I are watching ‘The Great American Baking Show’.. must just be that time of the year. 🤭
And such a lovely poem, truly.
Have a wonderful week and be well!
